SP Winners and Losers (4 Mar):

SP WINNERS:

Gil (NYY): 3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 0 HR, 56 pitches, 8 whiffs

Six strikeouts! He used a fastball and slider combo for 84% of the time. His fastball got 5 whiffs (42%). The 2 walks are not ideal, so that’s something to watch in his next start.

Pfaadt (AZ): 2.1 P, H, 0 ER, BB, K. 0 HR, 25 pitches, 3 whiffs

I didn’t like that he gave up four hard hits. His fastball velocity is also down 1 mph from last season. Not a concern as its early days, but something to keep an eye on.

Criswell (SEA): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, K, 0 HR, 41 pitches, 7 whiffs

Seven whiffs on 41 pitches. Changeup and sweeper playing well. Both had 2 whiffs (50%). Velo up across most pitches too.

Nola (PHI): 3.0 IP, H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 HR, 37 pitches, 2 whiffs

100% first pitch strikes. 38% CSW.

Flaherty (DET): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0 HR, 38 pithces, 4 whiffs

More sliders and changeups. Velocity up across most pitch types.

Peterson (NYM): 3.0 IP, H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR, 42 pitches, 9 whiffs

9 whiffs in 46 pitches. Fourseam velo down by 1.6 mph (90.7 mph). IVB 8!! Used the fourseam fastball 50% of the time. Slider got 4/7 whiffs.

Lowder (CIN): 3.0 P, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0 HR, 43 pitches, 10 whiffs

10 whiffs! Slider 4/8 whiffs and changeup 4/5 whiffs.

SP LOSERS:

Baz (BAL): 3 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 HR, 49 pitches, 9 whiffs

Plenty to like here too. Throwing a new sinker. Fastball velo is down 1.2 mph.

Crochet (BOS): 2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR, 53 pitches, 6 whiffs

Gave up 4 hard hits. First pitch strikes 27% (3/11). IVB down to 14. Cutter got 4/7 whiffs.

Woodford (TB): 2.1 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR, 47 pitches, 6 whiffs

79% first pitch strikes. Sweeper and changeup for 2 whiffs each.

Glasnow (LAD): 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, BB, 4 K, 0 HR, 50 pitches, 6 whiffs

His curve is so sweet. It got 4/6 whiffs. Gave up 6 hard hits, 3 off the fastball.

Other interesting notes:

Springs (ATH) – Changeup had 4 whiffs (40%). Fastball velo is up 0.9 mph.

Sproat (MIL) – Throwing a new cuttter and it got 2 whiffs (40%). Velo up across all pitches.

Ray (SF) – Threw his fastball 72% of the time and it was good. Had 7/22 whiffs and velo is up 1.2 mph.

Matthews (MIN) 8 whiffs in 56 pitches. Cutter 3/6 whiffs.

deGrom (TEX): 7 whiffs in 39 pitches. Slider and curve velo up. 4/10 whiffs on the fastball.

Musgrove (SD): Cutter 2/4 whiffs. IVB is up to 16 (from 13).
